Our Story


Owners Howard and Anita Hsu grew up working in the hustle of their family restaurants. From a young age they gained a passion for food and hospitality. Soon after graduating from the University of Georgia, the brother and sister duo opened Gezzo’s West Coast Burritos in Henry Country. With the success of Gezzo’s, Howard set out to expand the business and started experimenting with smoked meats. Eventually his special BBQ recipes won the Chomp and Stomp chili cook off, Suwanee wing festival and AVLF BBQ battle three years in a row.

Sweet Auburn Market saw how much Atlanta loved the Hsu’s southern style BBQ with a twist and invited Howard to open a permanent restaurant within the market. Here the name “Sweet Auburn Barbecue” was born.

For two years, Sweet Auburn Barbecue flourished with its food truck and the Sweet Auburn Market location. In 2014, Howard and Anita expanded once again opening the Poncey-Highlands location. This location features a sit down dining experience including a full bar and cocktail menu, taking their award-winning barbecue experience to a whole new level.

With Howard and Anita’s Asian roots and Southern upbringing, Sweet Auburn Barbecue offers traditional style barbecue with an Asian twist. Items on the menu such as pimento cheese wontons or coconut lemongrass ribs demonstrate the perfect marriage of traditional and innovative styles that Sweet Auburn Barbecue has to offer.

Owner

Howard’s love for tasty food has resulted in the happiness of many Atlanta folks over the years. He’s a genuine, family oriented guy that aims to continue to make Sweet Auburn Barbecue the best it can be. On a beautiful Atlanta day, you can probably find him longboarding around the Highlands in his Red Wing boots.

Anita Hsu


Owner

Anita is a UGA Bulldog influenced by California and her Asian roots. She and her brother Howard founded the Asian inspired BBQ concept Sweet Auburn BBQ. Anita emphasizes giving back to the community and wants her restaurant to be a place where customers feel at home. When she allows herself a day off, Anita can be found spending time with her husband Brian and two children who attend Springdale Park Elementary.  Go Dragons!

Joey Stallings


Director of Operations

Joey is a true ATLien from the Southside who likes to do things a little differently. Not only does he pour his milk in the bowl before his cereal, he helps create a barbecue experience that combines the traditional, down-home picnic table feel with a refined touch.

 

 

Kate Fugate


Service Manager

When she’s not at Sweet Auburn Barbecue, Kate can probably be found somewhere on Buford Highway looking for strange fruit or candy. She believes that each guest should leave loving Sweet Auburn Barbecue just as much as she does and she makes sure that the staff has all of the tools to make that happen.
